Product Description
Gary Allan's new album Set You Free is a perfectly named, well-conceived album that embodies his own evolution toward personal, creative freedom. The album, sequenced with a storyline in which a man breaks the restraints of a failed relationship and conquers the loneliness of its aftermath, is the result of Allan's own journey as a man and as an artist.
He took a number of new steps during the recording process by mixing up the production team, playing lead guitar on a number of tracks, writing more of his own material and using a handful of new co-writers. As a result, he came up with the most optimistic album of his career, one that acknowledges the hurdles of the past and the ways in which they ve helped to shape his current sense of renewal.
Gary Allan has sold over 6 million albums and has more than ten Top 10 singles to his credit. Allan s latest release, Set You Free, features Gary as a co-producer with longtime collaborator Mark Wright and Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Little Big Town). Includes the hit single Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain).

Gary Allan has been one of my favorite artists since he started in the 90's. He has never failed to make amazing music on any of his albums, and this is no exception. The special thing about this album, that most of the music of today lacks, is that it is made to tell a story as a WHOLE album, not just each song individually. From start to finish you can feel the story carry from one song to the next. To me it appears he wrote these songs about a breakup, going through the rough times of being angry, then sad, and at last, being "Good As New". It's definitely an album worth buying if you are a Gary Allan fan, or country music in general. Props to Gary for keeping real music with heartfelt lyrics alive.

Sorry, but this is not a 5-star album. Song great songs, but some awful ones too, including, "No Worries," a reggae-style number which is the worst thing Gary has ever done. And I've followed him since I first saw the video for "Her Man" in '96. I have all his stuff and you can trust me! If you are a longtime Gary fan like me, you'll find something you like in each of the first 7 tracks. "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)," "It Ain't The Whiskey," and my favorite on this record, "You Without Me," are all great ballads and the type of songs which have long made us fans of Gary. "One More Time" is another great one which even has a Coldplay-ish instrumental part which really works for me, and a nice 90-second instrumental outro. "Bones" is a great revenge song with one of those throat-ripping vocals that Gary does best, similar to the song "Wrecking Ball" from his "Living Hard" album. "Pieces" has a nice driving beat and another strong vocal. So that's the good news. Unfortunately, this album also includes the extremely mediocore "Hungover Heart," The Michael Buble wannabe "Drop" (which I would like to "drop" from this setlist), and the previously mentioned "No Worries." Just wait to you hear the female part on it. Groan! Finally the album wraps with the cloying "Good As New." The music is like from a Disney movie, matched with the most horrible lyrics, including this line: "Even my old dog, she can feel it too..." Yikes! In the past, you could put your money down and know you were gonna like every song on a Gary Allan record. But as his two most recent efforts have shown (Yup, "Get Off On The Pain" had a clunker or two), that's no longer the case. Do yourself a favor by listening to the samples first and buying song by song. You can make a 5-star album out of this, but it will only be a 7 or 8 song album.

Here's the gist: as far as a Gary Allan record goes, SET YOU FREE is mediocre. Face it, okay? But still: note those four stars up there. That's because even Gary Allan snoozing is still better than most of contemporary country music. If you doubt this, take a listen to his debut album, USED HEART FOR SALE: it's full of cliched nineties country rejects, yet somehow you can't help but listen to it repeatedly, singing along and finding something new to love each time through.SET YOU FREE does have some moments that border on great: the opener, a nicely chugging jaunt with just the right amount of twang; "Bones," which proves that Miranda Lambert isn't the only one allowed to go a little crazy; "It Ain't the Whiskey," which is perhaps the best song on here; the Warren Brothers-penned "Sand In My Soul;" "Drop," where Allan lets his sleaze out; and "Hungover Heart," reminiscent of TOUGH ALL OVER. Even "No Worries," a foray into reggae (pardon the rhyme), has its charm, though the genre doesn't do Allan many favors (he's far too melancholy of a singer for such an upbeat tune, even though he co-wrote it).Still, throughout the album, one gets the sense that Allan is playing it safe. The leadoff single, "Every Storm," is about as generic as it gets; it's only listenable because of Allan's earnest delivery, which is evident on all of the tracks here. That is, perhaps, Allan's greatest talent: he can take even the most mediocre song, and make it sound like something new and refreshing. Compared to past efforts (notably TOUGH ALL OVER and SMOKE RINGS IN THE DARK, both of which remain his best, and classics of the genre), SET YOU FREE falls a bit flat. But saying a Gary Allan record isn't as good as others doesn't mean a whole lot, in the grand scheme of things. The truth of the matter is, if Gary Allan is singing it, you're going to feel it, and this album is no exception.
