Product Description
Fifty years ago record buyers and radio programmers worldwide discovered a three-minute saga about the birth, marriage and death of the fictional Jimmy Brown. To celebrate the anniversary of the trio's breakthrough with The Three Bells, Bear Family asked Maxine Brown to select the tracks that rank among her personal favorites. All the big hits are here - many others should have been hits, but weren't: Margo (The Ninth Of May), Angel's Dolly, The Big Blizzard, Rhythm Of The Rain and You Can't Grow Peaches On A Cherry Tree. This set also includes fan favorites from the trio's earliest years, including Here Today And Gone Tomorrow and I Take The Chance, along with two enduring Jim Ed and Maxine duets: Looking Back To See and I Heard The Bluebirds Sing. 36 tracks.

What a wonderful flashback this is: The selections, quality, musicians, and "background chorus" are all excellent.Of course, the vocal harmony of The Browns is matchless. The booklet is also enjoyable reading, and the vintage photos are a beautiful additon.Betty LandrySouthampton, MA

Bear Family Records has long been in the amazement business, issuing product after product, each spellbindingly creative, complete, thoughtful and attractive. The Browns' "Country Music Odyssey" is a recent addition to the stellar Bear Family roster. The Browns were a family act, recording from the early 50s, and having a long run of country and pop hits in the late 50s and early 60s. Best known are "The Three Bells," "Scarlet Ribbons" and "The Old Lamplighter," but the quality of all of the Browns' output was wonderfully high. This disc features the selections of Maxine Brown, a lifelong member of the group, and it covers all the well-known songs plus enough tantalizing obscurities to tempt one to explore the full-catalog Browns Bear Family Box Set. My only complaint was the omisssion of Felice and Boudloux Bryant's tear-inducing "Teen-Ex," two minutes of harmonic pathos about the perils of "teenage-hood." "Seems a shame to be so young, and yet so broken-hearted." Superb photos, discography, vintage graphics. Fabulous!
