Product Description
Outstanding 2012 collection. What in the hell is Country Funk you ask? The answer is a complicated one, in part due to the fact that Country Funk is an inherently defiant genre, escaping all efforts at easy categorization. The style encompasses the elation of gospel with the sexual thrust of the blues, country hoedown harmony with inner city grit. It is alternately playful and melancholic, slow jammin', and booty shakin'. It is both studio slick and barroom raw. And while these all may seem unlikely combinations at first glance, upon close listen, it all makes sweet sense. Country Funk 1969-1975 is a melting pot concoction of the music of Dale Hawkins, John Randolph Marr, Cherokee, Johnny Adams, Mac Davis, Bob Darin, Jim Ford, Gray Fox, Link Wray, Bobby Charles, Tony Joe White, Dennis The Fox, Larry Jon Wilson, Bobbie Gentry, Gritz, and Johnny Jenkins.

Weird, fun collection
By kevnm
I'm not entirely convinced that there is any such thing as "Country Funk," and rock music has blended urban and rural sounds since its inception, but that doesn't make this anthology of obscure treats any less appealing. A lot if it is terrific fun, often reminiscent of the later Elvis bands with guitars, a couple keyboards, horn sections and gospel singers. Some of the tracks are actually quite funky, others appearing somewhere along the soul/country spectrum. "L.A. Memphis Tyler Texas" rocks and is representative of what's best here. "I'm Gonna Maker Her Love Me" is really a blues/R&B workout, "Fire and Brimstone" is a polyrhythmic wonder later covered by the Neville Brothers, "Bayou Country" sounds like a seventies hit like "Brandy" or "Ride Captain Ride," and "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" is profoundly dark and spooky/funky and rivals the Dr. John version. "Piledriver" is an amateurish but really appealing rhythm section behind a hilariously stilted vocal. I roll up my windows when that one comes on. Overall, a fun set that grows on the listener - a time capsule of evolutionary offshoots that reached a dead end, but remain fascinating and hugely entertaining.

Well compiled, not a bad track on it
By SingingDesigner
This CD could have easily been called "Country Funk and Soul" or just "Country Soul". Whether the "funky" vibe resonates throughout is debatable, but every song on the collection has a soulfulness to it. The bass riffs seem to be the hook that takes the listener from track to track; I give a lot of credit to the label that compiled this collection of songs. It stands up very well as a cohesive theme- in other words, there wasn't, at least for me, one track that I just felt like skipping. Each song is unique but fits in well with the overall experience. This CD will be place in my regular rotation, and I expect I will have the songs memorized before too long.
