First, I admit I don't have this volume. I am just starting to collect the series. I put my review here for the whole series because this is the newest disc and I don't think anyone else has reviewed any of these discs. I have never ever been a country fan in any sense although at times I have been drawn to those Time/Life ads for 50s and 60s country. I have always been drawn more to rock (of course, I'm a 62 year-old white guy), blues and jazz. I own the complete Blowin' a Fuse series of Bear Family R&B discs and the Sweet Soul Music follow up to that series. When Bear Family came out with this series I thought I should finally give country a try and I'm not disappointed. There are maybe a couple songs per disc that I'm familiar with from hearing them in my youth or over the years, but mostly this is unfamiliar territory to me. As usual with Bear Family the sound quality is outstanding. It took a while for the first one to hook me; I own 3000 cds and have many other musical interests but they've hooked me now. There's a lot of fun stuff here. I love 50s blues and I can hear a real emotional and lyrical parallel hear. This is music from the heart, not necessarily music for the masses. I won't get into specific tracks and I don't know a lot about the artists but I'm learning now. There are some real nice harmonies on some of these songs, some real catchy melodies. The books are like the Blowin a Fuse books with a nice background on every song. I don't like how hard it is to get the disc out of its jacket but that's my only complaint. I would think country fans who don't have all those years of prejudice against this kind of music would love these as the definitive country anthology, but I really recommend this series to all us noncountry fans.Right now I have this on an Ipod playlist with Arcade Fire, Aerosmith, Charlie Parker Live, some old Buddy Guy, 30s country blues and other stuff, just to give you an idea of where I'm coming from. For me, Bear Family discs are worth the added cost and are a good way to explore new (old) sounds.

If you love and collect vintage music then this cd and the companion volumes In the series are essential to your collection. I first bought the 16 volumes of Blowing The fuse, 10 volumes of sweet soul music and now I am upto 1960 In this series. Bear family are the greatest re-issue company ever, German quality Is second to none- just look at their cars! The cost of a Bear family cd Is cheap when considering they are the last word for vintage recordings, and you always get what you pay for. The beauty of buying all the cds In these series Is being able to have such a superb library at your fingertips. Blowing the fuse remains my favourite as Black r&b Is my first love. I am so excited that this country series Is going upto 1970. Please buy all of these cds, No matter about duplication,These are the next best thing to owning the original 78s and 45s.
