This is wonderful stuff for a fan of the early days of bluegrass, and moreover, for a fan of modern bluegrass who respects the roots. I started as a fan of John Duffey [having met him and enjoyed him live, in his Seldom Scene days], and unfortunately he is only in half of this collection, but all four CDs are good. Highly recommended.

4They were country when country was still cool

If your idea of a Ray Price song is "Danny Boy" and if you like Jim Reeves but didn't know he recorded a song called "Mexican Joe", you probably won't like this fine DVD. However, if you can remember when Jim Reeves had fiddles - not violins - in his band, and you can recall a time when Ray Price ruled the Post-Hank world with the 4/4 shuffle beat and twin fiddles, you're in for a real treat.

For starters, with the exception of "Mexican Joe", I've never been a big Jim Reeves fan, but that's not big deal, because not only does this disc have my favorite Jim Reeves song, the other ones aren't that bad, especially since Jimmy Day is playing steel guitar on most of them.

But since I really like Ray Price, it doesn't matter if it's Jim Reeves or Jim Nabors footage on the DVD, because the Ray Price performances are classic. Of course, "Crazy Arms" is here. So are "I'll Be There", "You Done Me Wrong" and "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes". The only early Ray Price hits that are missing are "Release Me" and "Heartaches By The Number", but that can easily be overlooked on the strength of the songs that are present on this collection.

If this review was an infomercial, this would be the part where the voiceover says, "But wait! There's more!" In addition to Jim Reeves and Ray Price, there are seven Ernest Tubb performances included. Most of E.T.'s big hits are on Shanachie's highly recommended Ernest Tubb/Marty Robbins DVD, but there's some great Ernest Tubb tunes here, especially "That Wild and Wicked Look" and the divorce weeper, "Dear Judge".

All the footage on this disc was filmed between 1954 and 1956, before Nashville replaced the fiddle and steel guitar with flutes and oboes in attempt to regain fans lost to the Rock & Roll juggernaut. It might seem corny to today's country music fans, but this is the real deal, folks... in glorious mono and vibrant technicolor.

I purchased this video several months ago and have watched it many times. All the performers did a great job, but I especially liked the rousing numbers done by Ray Price. The color and picture quality were quite good considering the fact that these performances were filmed from 1954 thru 1956. I would reccomend this video to anyone who enjoys the Grand Ole Opry Stars of the 1950's.

5A continuation, but with vocals this time.

This isn't truly a sequel to the first collection, but rather is a continuation adding, to the instrumentals, a few vocals to balance out the representation of music here. I personally could wish for more female vocals in addition to the "Bonus Track". I'm sure Hawaii has more than one notable lady singer.

That's not enough to take away a star though. This again is a most rewarding collection. However, I always associated the ukulele with hawaiian music and there's only one cut, "Pu'u Anahula" which includes one. There is more traditional music here than with the first collection, including the familiar and beautiful "Aloha Oe", a classic love song written by Queen Lili'uokalani in 1877. Also notable and familiar is the "Radio Hula" as played by Led Kaapana.

This record and its predecesser are great CDs to help create a romantic, tropical atmosphere. Hey, they'd be great background for a luau!

This is a two dvd set that showcases many of traditional country music's legends. It originally aired in 1978 in two two-hour showings: Country Night of Stars (disc one) and Country Night of Stars II (disc two). The performances are again notable in that they showcase many of country's original legends who are no longer with us (i.e. Johnny Paycheck, Uncle Dave Macon (clip), Tennessee Ernie Ford, Conway Twitty, Jimmie Davis, Roger Miller, Royce Kendall, Eddy Arnold, Pee Wee King, Don Gibson, Lester Flatt, Dottie West, Freddie Fender, and Eddie Rabbitt). 5Good music

Todays country music is yesterdays Pop and Rock. Why they moved into the country field I don't know. Most female artist today is just wide open mouth screaming and male artist just talk, one step above Rap. No one seems to sing anymore. This DVD contains some of our best country artist in their prime. They sing and can carry a tune. If you long for good country music, then you will injoy this DVD.

5Country's Greatest Stars DVD--a review

I truly enjoyed watching this DVD because it features live performances of some of my favorite artists of the 1970's including Ronnie Milsap, Barbara Mandrell, Anne Murray and others. The picture and sound quality are very good and some of the '70's outfits and hairstyles are somewhat comical in retrospect. I think any country music fan of that particular era will enjoy this production.

Every disc in this series, logically begun at 1945 and now upto 1965, have a story to tell but 1952 might be one of the more historically significant of the series. Kitty's Honky Tonk Angels, Bill Haley's proto rock, Hank Thompson's Wild Side, Big Bill Lister's Tear in his Beer, Slim Whitman's Indian Love Call. Strange, beautiful, this is all that country music could ever hope to be. It's authenticity and it's authority over the subject matter, have become this series' stock in trade. CDs are a dying commodity, you gotta earn it, Bear Family is killing it.

Bear Family just seems to keep getting it right when releasing music from another era!! I recall may of these being played by my parents on the old Victerola!! In those days it was 78R PM. Many today do not know about record formats what with MP3 and Ipods dominating!! Thank you Bear Family for bringing back these songs and artists that now are long forgotten. Keep on reissuing this kind of music for us ol' folks!!!

5Lots of great music!

Shania Twain is a hit machine and all of her best showed up in Chicago. I really enjoy this DVD when I get home from work. Shania has a very high energy show, a rockin' band and great chemistry with her fans. I love her new songs like "She's Not Just a Pretty Face" and "I'm Gonna Getcha Good", but her old songs are performed with equal zest! Definitely a must have for the fan!

That girl is so lucky.The saddest thing is that they don't have the videos and Interviews of Shania's visit to Chicago when she was not onstage. When they shown this concert on NBC and CMT, the best part was Shania getting to play for the Chicago Cubs baseball team for a day and going into the announcer's booth being the guest conductor and leading the crowd in Take me out to the ballgame. I loved that part. That was acually the highlight of Shania's visit to Chicago. It's sad they don't have it on this DVD. Still enjoy the video!

5Music doesn't get better than this

This is by far my favorite presentation of Shania's incredible music--she's live, she's alive, and she keeps that audience of 50,000 people on their feet and loving her for over two hours.I'm a recent fan of Shania's (must have been asleep) and have several of her CDs and DVDs. This is by far my favorite, because of the incredible connectedness between her and her audience, fueled by her complete command of her material, her near-unbelievable stage presence, and the obvious love that she and the audience keep blowing back and forth.Her CDs are wonderful (especially The Best of Shania Twain) and the other videos I have are fine--her costumes are actually sexier on The Platinum Collection--but if I had to choose only one disk, this would be the winner.
